Minister of Tourism Manuel Heredia on Bradley Paumen

Manuel Heredia

As we said, Bradley Paumen was before the courts this afternoon in Belmopan and secured bail for a slew of charges relating to a murder for hire plot he allegedly orchestrated. An issue that has been robbing local tour operators is that even while he has been exposed for his alleged deeds, he continues to operate freely. This morning, the Minister of Tourism was asked about the Paumen situation and here’s what he had to say.

Manuel Heredia, Minister of Tourism

“That matter is in the courts at the moment. I don’t know the nuts and bolts of that. I know that Mister Paumen has invested substantially in Belize. I have seen his project and I think that it is a wonderful project. What happened there, other ministries are involved directly. From the Ministry of Tourism, I don’t believe it is anything that has to do directly with the tourism industry that really stir up this thing to happen.”

“Sir, but the B.T.B. is licensing someone who a judge has said basically trespassed someone’s land to operate his tours.”

Manuel Heredia

“That was not before…any license that is done, there is a format that we use whereby you have to have a police record. Even our local tour guides have to produce a police record and other things which will ensure that the vetting committee is fully conscious that this person is in the proper form to operate.”

“So now the judgment case and the case of abetment to murder that will be factored into further decision if he will keep his license or not?”

Manuel Heredia

“Whatever the court decide most naturally, we as the regulators will have to take action against whatever the court rules. That is the law of the country and that is how we work over here.”
