Blackadore Caye Project Supported By G.O.B.

Hollywood Actor Leonardo Di Caprio is planning to build a massive and impressive resort at Blackadore Caye in San Pedro which he hopes to open in 2018. Plans for the mega tourism development involve the construction of villas across a platform above water levels. The site is also within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve which is a protected area. A first round of consultations took place on January fourteenth, and while there was government support, residents gave a thumbs-down to the development because of environmental concerns. Another round of consultations will be held which the Minister of Tourism believes will clear up doubts about the merits of the development.

“Blackadore Caye, I believe that there will be a second consultation. My government and I fully support the project. My government and I fully support the project. I believe that it is one of its kind, but because there were at least three or four persons that were vocal particularly about the over the water structure; I think they are very genuine investors because they are willing to go back to a second consultation in San Pedro, making sure that they satisfy almost every single one that has something for or against it.”

“Sir built satisfying everyone may be impossible because you would always have someone who is against the project.”

“I agree, you cannot satisfy the…but again consultations doesn’t mean that you have to do everything that people are saying. But at least these people want to go back to the public and say look, probably you didn’t understand. Personally myself, the mayor, the Chairman of the Building Authority in San Pedro…we have seen that. Our vetting subcommittee of government has gone over it and we believe that it is a one of its kind and it can be a model for the region and probably for the whole world. So we totally support it. I think after the consultation, I made my comments to the press and I made it very clear that my interest is to look after the interests of the tour guide, the tour operators, the students and everybody. So this is one project that I have seen that they are talking about restoration—not only building, but restoring. It is millions of dollars that will be invested over there. When it comes to students, they are graduating and there are very few places that they can go. I believe that when you have these types of projects, it is opening the door for our young people to be able to access a good opportunity.”
