$17 Million Municipal Airstrip Almost Completed

Manuel Heredia

The Belize Tourism Board reported last week that tourism numbers for 2015 were impressive with growth in airport arrivals. These numbers are expected to grow even further this year. This morning, Minister Heredia disclosed that the seventeen-million-dollar municipal airstrip project is about to conclude. The expansion includes the modernization of the Belize City airstrip to bring it to standards which would surpass the international airport.

Manuel Heredia, Minister of Civil Aviation

“The contract calls for the ending of March, but personally I believe that it will be till the middle of April cause we had some little delays. But that municipal airstrip, when complete is supposed to be one of the best municipal airstrips in the country. It is estimated to cost almost seventeen million dollars at the end, with running lights, with an apron—no other airstrips have an apron. It will be similar to international airport, but a little smaller. But I believe that it will be more modern than the international airport. If you look around they are working on the fencing. It will have a huge parking area; hot mix parking area with security. If you want to travel somewhere and leave your vehicle, it will be safe over there for a minimal fee. So we are trying to do not only Belize City, but all our airstrips, making sure that they are at the minimum standards—looking into safety and making sure that our tourists and our local people can get the best.”

The minister also confirmed the termination of four employees, saying that it is a matter being dealt with at the technical level in civil aviation. The minister also said that persons that do not comply with the necessary training and standards cannot remain in the system.
