The Notorious Melin Vasquez and Hugo Casanova Released

Two Belizeans, Milin Vasquez from Orange Walk Town and Hugo Casanova from Corozal District have been in a Mexican jail since February 2013 after they were allegedly busted by Mexican authorities. The duo was reportedly in the company of notorious Mexican dealer, Carlos Cabanas Catzin, known as the Monster, when they were found with two million dollars worth of crystal meth.  The sensational bust was widely reported in the Mexican newspapers; it was carried out by the Mexican Navy at a house on Avenida Benito Juarez in Chetumal.  A number of persons were arrested when the marines surprised them inside the house. Casanova and Vasquez were remanded at the Cereso Prison in Chetumal where months later, Casanova was reportedly linked to a drug cartel operating freely within the prison.  And last August, Casanova was implicated in a double homicide.  We bring up all this information, because there is an unexpected turn in their case. News Five has learnt that Casanova and Vasquez will be handed over to Belize this week after being processed by the Mexican immigration who will decide whether to deport them or just hand them over.  Unofficially, it is reported that their attorney has successfully argued in court that their detention in the house raid was illegal because there was no warrant when the anti-drug operation was carried out. Furthermore they argued that there is not enough evidence to link the duo to the drugs found in the house so this week they will be released.  Casanova and Vasquez have a history with the law in Belize. Casanova beat a drug related murder in 1998 and Vasquez was also freed in a case involving a drug plane in Revenge Lagoon in December of 1995.
