Beleaguered Deputy ComPol Miguel Segura Remains on Interdiction

Miguel Segura

Embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Miguel Segura, remains on interdiction and is receiving only half of his monthly salary, despite being sued by the family of Yolanda Valencia.  The woman perished in a road traffic accident in August 2014, when a Nissan Pathfinder driven by an allegedly intoxicated Segura collided head-on into a taxi cab driven by Yanie Cu.  In the wake of that incident, Deputy ComPol Segura’s case has been meandering through the court system.  Valencia’s elderly mother complains that justice has been extremely slow in being meted out; a point which Commissioner Allen Whylie admits is outside of the control of the Belize Police Department.

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police

“Mister Segura as you know was involved in a very unfortunate incident. He is still the substantive deputy commissioner of police. Since the incident has occurred he had initially been suspended and then later the status changed where he was interdicted from duty. So whilst he is still the substantive deputy commissioner of police, all his policing powers are held in abeyance and he is on basically half pay. Yes, the matter is before the court and when that matter concludes then we know how we move forward.”

“It has taken a while for the criminal trial to progress up to the point where it is and as a result they had to go forward with their civil suit in the absence of a guilty verdict. Can you tell us if you know why it has taken this amount of time?”

“Well I don’t think that anybody can accused the police of not doing what they do. Once we’ve arrested and charged then and we are finished with the case file, then it’s up to the court to set these things. You must understand that it’s an indictable matter and there are a lot of other cases also that were before that matter and so it’s the court sets when those matters will be tried.”

The lawsuit against Deputy ComPol Segura resumed in the Supreme Court on January fourteenth.

If you can’t trust the police how will you the system. He is not above the law and due process of the case brought on. It is a shame to hear he is still collecting tax payers money, Not Surprising, this is the Belize way.

Y’all need a better way of dealing with situation like these…that poor family lost a love one..and we all can clearly see that mr. Segura was at fault. Its not fair not to punish just because he was a commissioner ..Come on open urs eyes…these are the things that others see and follow thru because no justice take place… ppl are complacent in our system. How in the world is this man still getting half his pay… like what are you all thinking…

What a way to bring this across you all as police should push the matter, you are the ppl we go to; and then ppl question why do families, Friends take action in their hands… answer is right above…because the police does not care…they aren’t persistent.

Wake up..we need justice..n its starts with those you can make a difference…
