A Caledonia Resident is Missing, Is His Disappearance Drug-related?

Luis Alcoser

A father of two from Caledonia, Corozal is at the center of a police investigation that could be related to an Orange Walk drug bust late last week in which eighty-three kilos of compressed marijuana were seized by police. But this is just an allegation. Now, thirty-one-year old Luis Alcoser went missing on Tuesday when he set out to buy items to retail at the small shop he owns in the village. He has not returned home since then, but his vehicle has been recovered. The small SUV was found off the highway with at least four bullet holes and while those signs are inconclusive about the motive for his disappearance, the Alcoser family fears the worst. News Five’s Duane Moody headed north and files the following report.

Where is thirty-one year old Luis Alcoser? The Caledonia resident left home on Tuesday morning at six o’clock to buy supplies for his grocery shop and has not been seen or heard from since.  Now the norm is to make a report after forty-eight hours,  but the family is fearing the worst because this morning, his Kia Sportage SUV was discovered bullet riddled off the roadside about two miles out of the village.

“Last night, we were waiting for him to see if he was going to come home. To be honest, I don’t know where he goes. I arrived at the spot and I saw that there were some bullet holes on the vehicle. I was going to drive the vehicle home, but I didn’t move it because I saw the bullet holes. When I arrived at the scene, the door was opened, the vehicle was inside the vehicle.”

Police responded to the report of the abandoned vehicle this morning, but villagers say that the SUV was seen off the road since midnight and the front passenger door was open. All that was found inside was the driver’s license of Luis, which was taken to his father this morning by a villager who heard the vehicle alarm echoing in the distance. A suspicious pickup truck was also seen circling in the village that night.

“Earlier in the morning, a man was shouting for me and said that a vehicle on the side of the road and I’m not sure if it is for your son but his license was inside. So I got up and I went to the scene on my bicycle. To be honest, I don’t know what happened to him because a villager, who is also my relative, told me that he was going out of the village around twelve midnight and he saw the vehicle there, but didn’t know who was the owner. He said there was another suspicious vehicle in the area, but he did not recognize it from the village. He went to visit his brother and the vehicle was by the white mall pit and he says he’s never seen that vehicle before. And the occupants tried to get him to stop, but he didn’t and continues on his journey.”

But Luis’ disappearance remains a mystery; it is not known if he was kidnapped by his assailant or assailants or even if he escaped from them and is in hiding. What is believed, however, is that he was not injured in the shooting because after scenes of crime personnel processed the scene, no blood was discovered in the vehicle or in the area.

“A team was immediately deployed to the area; on arrival at the scene, a black Kia Sportage with license plate # 16979 was seen on the right hand side of the road heading towards Caledonia. The said vehicle was about five to six feet off the road. The vehicle was processed where three apparent bullet holes were found on the windshield and one on the driver’s side door. The motive at this time is unknown and the driver of the vehicle, we are still in search of him.”

According to police and the family, Luis has not had run-ins with the law, so his disappearance is puzzling.  But they remain hopeful that he is still alive.

“I can’t say because I don’t know anything that he goes around giving trouble. I don’t know where he went. I don’t know if he had enemies. He goes out and he doesn’t tell me anything; if he was in fights or anything. He comes home, he eats, and sleeps. We don’t know where he is or what happened to him. we hope that nothing bad has happened to him because he is my only son and I can’t think that he has been killed. Only God knows.”
