Has Gun License of Election Night Shooter Been Revoked?

More than two months ago on election night, a close affiliate and supporter of Minister of Police John Saldivar allegedly fired his weapon into the air in celebration. The man was immediately detained by police officers on the scene. His detention was short-lived, however, as Saldivar and a crowd of supporters descended on them. As Saldivar shouted at the officers to back off, those around him wrested the detained man from the grasp of Police. The thinking was that nothing would come of the matter, even as Officer Commanding Belmopan Howell Gillett assured us that an investigation was ongoing. After about a month, we were informed that a letter had been written to the alleged shooter informing him of the offence, and further informing him that a recommendation had been made for his gun license to be revoked. So was it? Today for the first time since the incident, we got a chance to ask Police Commissioner Allen Whylie directly.

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police

“You’ve interviewed the O.C. on that matter and I believe he had indicated that while it was suspected that that was the gentleman who had fired, none of the officers who were presented were able to say he had fired his weapon and no member of the public has come forward to identify and say he had fired his weapon. So the investigation remains open, but he has not been arrested or anything.”

Mike Rudon

“Sir, they had said…Mister Gillett had said that a letter had been sent to the gentleman to recommend that his license be revoked.”

Allen Whylie

“Yes again, the license has not been revoked. If you go under the firearm act, there is a small avenue in how the commissioner can revoke gun license. So whilst he made the recommendations, it has not been revoked.”
