Former Bailiff Accused of Still Doing Business on Behalf of Magistrate’s Court

Gabriel Casey

A former bailiff is being accused of continuing with business as usual even though he was released from the government service at the end of last December. Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith sent out notice today saying that Gabriel Casey is not authorized to conduct any business on behalf of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court with effect from December, twenty-eighth, 2015 which was the last day he held the post as bailiff. Casey was employed as a collection agent for monies owed to the court by defendants in civil suits. But he got into trouble in 2014 for collecting a three thousand dollar debt from a defendant and did not deliver the money to the court. A complaint was made against him over which he had to appear before the Public Service Commission. He was first placed on administrative leave, but the Commission recommended that he be reinstated.  There are other reports of impropriety, which remain unconfirmed. Still yet, at the end of the year, he was released from government service.
