Is the Belize Police Department Adequately Resourced?

Allen Whylie

There has been a constant cry from Police formations countrywide for resources. It’s no closely held secret that the Department is strapped for vehicles and equipment and even financial resources. But the statistics that crime is down released seem to bear out a theory that the police have what they need, even if they may not have what they want in an ideal world. Commissioner Whylie told us today that needs and wants are two different things, and the Police Department has been getting, and will continue to get all that it needs to fight crime efficiently and effectively.

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police

“It’s a known fact that no Police Department will have all the things they think they need, but there’s a difference between needs and wants. We’ve received an additional increase in human resources. We will continue to recruit. We’re in the process of completing another recruiting intake. We already have the finance and the approval to do that and I believe that by the middle of next month or the end of next month that process will be completed in terms of the selection, the medical and persons entering this academy. We’ve received additional vehicles. We’ve received additional equipment, firearms and safety vests. We continue to get support through the US CARSI Program. We have the CABEI loan signed by government. While the funds have not yet started to come in we anticipate that sometime this year the funds will start to roll. So all those things will help us in terms of improving the physical infrastructure of the department as well as the resources, the additional equipment, technology, the things that we need to assist us in this ongoing fight.”
