South Side Belize City Records First Murder for 2016

Kieron Shaquille Moss

The first murder for the year took place minutes after five o’clock on New Year’s Day. A young man was accompanying two females from the neighborhood on Jane Usher Boulevard in the old capital when he was accosted. One of two men opened fire hitting him multiple times. Kieron Shaquille Moss of a Freedom Street did not stand a chance, he died on the spot but it is still unclear why he was a wanted man. News Five’s Duane Moody went looking for answers and files the following report.

Just hours into the New Year the first murder would be recorded in the city. The shooting claimed the life of a twenty-one year old Kieron Shaquille Moss who was escorting two young ladies home after bringing in the New Year at Elements Night Club, when they were approached by two men on a motorcycle. One reportedly got off the motorbike and fired up to ten shots at Moss. Moss was hit multiple times to the head, chest and side; his mortally wounded body was found face down on Levi Slusher Street in the Jane Usher Boulevard area.

“There was a young man that was shot. On arrival, police saw one Kieron Moss of Freedom Street who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body. He was apparently dead on the scene and was later confirmed by the medical people from the ambulance. What we have confirmed so far is that he was with two females at the time. I am not aware of anyone being grazed, but we have since recorded statements from those two females and as a result, we are still investigating that incident.”

While police say that his companions were not injured in the gun violence, News Five understands that one was grazed on a finger. But why was the youth so violently killed? Family, friends and police still can’t fathom a motive.

“Investigation at this time, we have since detained one young man of interest who we believe could assist us with our investigation for the purpose of questioning. No motive so far as it relates to this shooting we have established. We are still investigating.”

Rowena Pascascio, Vice Principal, Student Services, ACC

“It was also a shock for me because I had just seen Kieron within that same week. Hearing that he lost his life and he lost it to gun violence was extremely disturbing for me.”

At word of his untimely demise, social media lit up with former classmates as well as friends and family expressing their disbelief that Moss was murdered. The former Anglican Cathedral College student graduated in 2014 and was well liked at the school. He was especially known for his skills in sports.

“Kieron came to us as a transfer student; he graduated two years ago. All I can say about him is that he was an extremely humble young man. He didn’t get into any problems other than the regular mischief that high schoolers get into –teasing his peers and so on. But I think one of the things we remember most about him was his social way that he was; nothing got him down. He was always chipper; I would be scolding and Kieron would be grinning. And it is not that he was taking you for granted, but that he was always an optimistic person despite whatever came him way. He will be greatly missed. He was friends with students from fourth to first because that’s just the way he was. He was extremely talkative, but it was never anything negative coming from him. Here at the school, a lot of our teachers are really sadden to hear that he had to lose his life in this manner and that way.”

“Kieron was one of our top athletes here at ACC; he plays both basketball and football. Basketball the three-point shooting was his forte. I remember Kieron with a semi-final game that we had against Gwen Liz and we thought the game was over and Kieron said sir just get the ball to me and Kieron made the three-pointer and took us into overtime with that game. That’s one game we could remember Kieron most about.”
