The First Bundle of Joy to Arrive on New Year’s Day

So far we have reported on the road fatalities, murders and other crimes. But there is some good news that prompted celebrations over at the K.H.M.H. The birth of babies is always a joyful occasion, so when we headed out to the hospital to meet 2016’s firstborn; we also had opportunity to meet the proud parents of newborns who made their dramatic entrance into this world at the close of 2015.  News Five’s Duane Moody was on hand at the K.H.M.H.

The first born of the New Year at the K.H.M.H. was Aiden Alexander Rhys. We were unable to meet with him because he was under observation inside the Intensive Care Unit, but the eight-pound-fourteen-ounce baby is the second child of Bridget Rhys. The thirty-two year old mother gave birth to her baby boy just after two on January first.

It was a celebration of life at the K.H.M.H. on Saturday morning as various corporate citizens brought gifts for the newborn babies and their mothers.

“Every year, we’ve been doing this donation. We carry it on as a tradition on behalf of the San Cas Group of Companies where we award a package which is suitable for a newborn baby and the mother. We include items like Huggies which is very necessary; Huggies Diapers, Huggies Wipes and of course Ovaltine for mommy. This hospital prides itself on a breastfeeding only campaign so we include the Ovaltine to help the mother with the breast milk and of course Dutch Lady Milk to add along with the Ovaltine. It is our social responsibility to give back to our community that has been serving us. This year, Santiago Castillo will celebrate ninety-years of being in Belize and this is the start of celebrating that ninetieth anniversary in Belize so we also extended the packages to the other hospitals here in Belize. So if you had a baby, not here at the Karl Heusner Memorial, you will receive a package also.”

“I never did think about all this so I am grateful and I know that it will help a lot because things noh really cheap these days and I am so, so grateful. Through the whole process, the nurses at K.H.M.H. were wonderful. They helped me; I give them trouble and they were still patient with me. So it’s a blessing.”

At the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, Brodies handed out care packages to the first two babies for 2016. As is tradition, San Cas Group of Companies also handed out care packages to all mothers in the ward including Belize City resident, Amanda Bernard, who gave birth to baby Kaydon Brown, her third son, just hours before the clock struck twelve.

“How do you feel to now be given cash as well as items to help you and Kaydon as he grows?”

Amanda Bernard

“Well I feel very good because I never experience something like this in my life before. So I really thank everyone who came and gave me the gift for baby Kaydon.”

Bernard also received a cheque of three hundred dollars from the Belize City Lion’s Club.

“For over the past thirty years, we’ve been giving gift to the first baby of the year, but being a nurse, I visited one family after the fact and I found that the crib was just laying there because all pregnant women prepare a laid for their baby. And I took it back to the board and it was discussed and decided that we give a cheque instead that she can use that cheque how she wants.”

The birth of a child, especially a firstborn, is also an exciting experience for fathers. Frederick Guy’ son is the third baby born at the K.H.M.H. for 2016 and Guy says he feels honored.

“It is very exciting the entire time. It’s my first child actually. I am twenty0-five years old. I feel honored not only to have one of the first to be born for the year, but I am very honored to be a father. It’s a boy; I haven’t got confirmed the weight as yet, but he’s a fairly large kid. We have the names already but we are just waiting for the mom to come out of the recovery room. He will be named Clace, Clace Guy.”
