Convicted Murderer Receives Sentence After 13 Years on Death Row

Glenford Baptist

Sentencing for Glenford Baptist took place this morning in the courtroom of Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin. Baptist is the inmate who languished in prison for thirteen years on death row without being sentenced. Last week in a hearing attorneys and the crown agreed that his constitutional rights were breached and violated. Today, the Chief Justice imposed a twenty-five-year jail term upon Baptist who was convicted in November of 2001 for the murder of an Iguana Street man who was gunned down in front of his girlfriend.  The prison term is to take effect beginning on the day Baptist was convicted and placed on death row.  The crown had asked the court to impose a term of no less than twenty five years since they conceded that his constitutional rights were violated. CJ Benjamin looked at a number of factors including the issue of rehabilitation, his living condition at the time he committed the murder, and most importantly, the crime committed. The deceased was in the company of a girlfriend and others when three persons, including Baptist, rode by and shot and killed Azrin White. On July twenty-fourth, 2000, Baptist was charged with murder and in November 2001, he was convicted and sentenced to death row.  Having served thirteen years, Baptist will now spend another twelve years behind bars.

And do you actually think justice was served? What about the life of the person he took and his family? Where is their justice? He should rot in jail! Look at the reason why he took this person’s life? You know what will eventually happen in Belize? Street Justice. People are fed up with the inept police and magistrates and judges.
