7 More Containers of Rice Bound for Belize Says Jack Charles

Jack Charles

Even as there is no resolution to the three containers of rice at the Big Creek Port, according to Jack Charles, a total of seven more containers are expected into the country within the next two weeks.  Importation and cheap retail, he says, will significantly reduce the contraband rice coming in from Mexico.

Jack Charles, Importer

“Those are not only three containers right, I was concentrating on twenty percent consumption so we are looking at ten containers, probably the next two weeks we are getting the other seven coming in.”

Isani Cayetano

“How do you respond to the argument that as one of the larger importers in the country, particularly where it concerns food, you can choose any other item that comprises the food basket besides rice, but yet you’re challenging an entire industry by going for the one staple that the government is willing to stick its neck out to protect?”

Jack Charles

“Sir, as I mentioned before, we were trying to bring in the rice in March.  So I gave enough time, up to eight months for them to fix it and bring back the rice.  My recent press release says that also that if they are ready to bring back the rice to sixty cents I will reconsider my position.  But at the end of the day, as I was mentioning before, this particular price is going to help all those rice coming in from Mexico to Belize.  That will definitely stop.”

So tonight, the rice stalemate continues to linger.

So he was bluffing when he said he would supply only “20 percent” of the rice consumption in Belize. This is bad business Mr Charles. Greed will kill the country!

  2. Belizean Pride says:

Mr. Charles we don’t want the Guyanese rice period!!!! As a customer I fully support our local products unless we didn’t have enough then I would agree to say bring in some to Belize. But honestly it’s just a bad idea that you have. So I won’t buy this rice and hope the rest of Belizeans that really want to support our locals will do the same also.
