Broaster in Witness Protection

Notorious street figure Tyrone Meighan was charged for rape in that home invasion, following an identification parade. That brings up an issue which has plagued the prosecution in serious crimes for years – witnesses who refuse to testify because there is a legitimate risk that they will be targeted. Today Senior Superintendent Edward Broaster confirmed that even before this case, the protection of witnesses has always been an area that needs real focus.

“In the absence of this case, there’s always a need for some sort of witness protection in Belize to ensure that people can feel comfortable in coming forward and making reports and ensure that their safety will be looked after indeed.”

“Is it something that police is looking actively at?”

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

“We’ve been advocating for such a program. As a matter of fact, I know there is a committee looking at ways in which we can implement some sort of witness protection. It might not be elaborate scheme, but we are looking at how we can come up with an appropriate program that would suit the needs of witnesses in Belize.”
