Parent Teachers Association Clamor for Speed Bump on Busy Highway

Today as the school mourned, parents gathered to express their anger and frustration at the death of a student – a death they feel could have been avoided by the placement of a speed bump on the busy highway which passes right next to the school. The President of the Parent/Teachers Association Alexander Torres told News Five that it is unfortunate, and sad that this young boy had to die because nobody listened.

Alexander Torres, President, PTA, Solomon’s SDA

“Actually for quite some time we have been asking for a pedestrian ramp or somebody that could be out there with the students when they cross the road. In the morning, we have over a hundred students crossing that road. I mean me myself as a parent I have three kids who have to pass that street in the morning and in the evening. And I have to wait with my kids and the transportation don’t even wait or hesitate, they come straight across. We have to be out there like five ten fifteen minutes sometimes. There are some drivers who are in their mind and they stop, but it is not all of them. And I personally had already asked the area representative; I told him about it, I brought it to his attention and he said he will work on it, but we are still waiting.”

“How long did you guys start this petition or this request?”

Alexander Torres

“Well actually it would have been from the previous PTA. They have been asking…a pedestrian ramp was promised to us while they were fixing the street and nothing had been done at all. All they did was place the cat eye and the cat eye is not helping. As a matter of fact, where the little boy got hit, there was a ramp there, a sleeping bump, or whatever they call it and while fixing the street, they moved it. If that was there, it would have been a different story. But while fixing the road, they moved all that and they have not put up a sign, they have not placed up any pump to replace anything. You know it just going through my mind that when I pass through and I got to Burrell Boom, there are signs for cross of animals like the tapir and stuff. And right here we have our students and there is no sign that it is a crossing for students so that the drivers would be aware of it.”

Another person lost his life in a traffic fatality. The accident happened at the Santa Cruz Junction and Placencia Road in the south, where thirty-seven year-old David Anthony Bermudez, of San Ignacio, Cayo was driving a Dodge pickup truck heading to Mayan King Village. Fifty year old Jorge Reynoso Juarez of Santa Cruz village was riding his bicycle when he was hit by Bermudez.  Juarez was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital where he passed away. Bermudez has since been detained pending investigations.

  1. MNHG says:

SPEED BUMPS WILL NOT HELP, LET THEM STOP SELLING DRIVER`S LICENSE, THAT WILL HELP.
SEE THE DRIVERS THAT STOP FOR KIDS TO PASS?
THOSE DRIVERS ARE EXPERIENCED DRIVERS THAT DID NOT BUY THEIR DRIVER`S LICENSE.
THAT UNTIMELY DEATH WILL BE PAID FOR BY THOSE THAT SOLD THE DRIVER`S LICENSE.
THEY THAT SOLD THE LICENSE GAVE THE DRIVER A WEAPON TO GO AND KILL, AND HE DID USE IT AND KILLED THE CHILD.
