PM Admits Nanes Debacle Has Created Tension with Mexico

Dean Barrow

But speaking on a more serious note, P.M. Barrow expressed that he greatly regrets the Nanes situation which has created some tension with our northernmost neighbour who had requested the extradition of the fugitive.

Dean Barrow, Prime Minister

“The advice was that the extradition treaty with Mexico had never been incorporated into our Municipal Law and for that reason there was the inability to proceed with honouring the Mexican request for extradition. The Mexicans has sent us a note pointing out that in fact the extradition treaty that was signed years ago, as a matter of fact it shows that I was the minister of Foreign Affairs at that time…I’ve really been around too long you know. So they are at a lost to understand why we couldn’t act on a treaty that in fact had been ratified and as far as they know and as far as they assert was in force. I have asked the Attorney General’s ministry to do a relook at the situation but the position seems to be that even though as a matter of international relations, once it was ratified, it did take into effect between the two countries. Something more was necessary for this incorporation in to Municipal Law in order for the state of Belize to have been able to proceed under the terms of the extradition treaty. I was never an expert in that area and the good people of Belize have seen it fit to relieve me over the past what almost eight years? From having to think too anxiety, to dilate to very much on these issues of legal nicety, legal complexity but it is an answer that we need to provide to the Mexicans. It is an answer that even now the attorney general and the solicitor general and the legal officers in that ministry are seeking to clarify. So from that point of view, I want to take the opportunity to say again to our friends the Mexicans that it is a source of extreme regret to me that in fact we were not able to simply hand this fellow over to them.”

  1. CEO says:

These are answers they are looking up now to try and explain away their blunder!

We handed over others to what ever country they were citizens of.

If this answer was the truth then why is the PM the one explaining after the fact instead of law enforcement explaining this before they released him. If law enforcement were the ones that made this determination after their findings they should have forwarded their findings to the AG and explain the situation then release the man.
