$44.7 Million in Petrocaribe Money, Was It Used for Electioneering?

Dean Barrow

Today’s sitting of the House of Representatives was the last of this year, and the one usually reserved for the only bit of goodwill and cheer ever seen in that chamber. It opened with the tabling of two motions for House approval of loans, one for the refurbishing of the Hummingbird Highway and the other for the second phase of the Sustainable Tourism Program. Those got no rise from any quarter, but then there was a bill for the appropriation of forty-four point seven million dollars of Petrocaribe monies which has actually already been spent. That was good for hours of debate.

Dean Barrow, Prime Minister

“We are now seeking to comply with the law and get off to a good start. All the details of the spending have been provided to members and I would ask that in fact we past this bill so that we can be on the good foot with our requirements under the new law.”

Said Musa, Member for Fort George

Said Musa

“I suppose that explains why all this mattresses were circulating all over the place just before the elections. Why all the refrigerators and stoves, plywood and everything else was circulating. Yes, Mr, Espejo did circulate those things in the Fort George division but it didn’t help him. The government is boasting that they bought the election. Look at how they treated their poor rural constituencies; only 20 thousand dollars assistance for the small farmers. But four point three million assistance for the flood. I just want to pick out one item, the overall picture is forty add million dollars used on buying this election, that’s what should be recorded Mr. Speaker.”

Patrick Faber

Patrick Faber, Member for Collet

“The Collet constituency was one the constituencies that was hardest hit by the flood and yes the people of that constituency received mattress but before the flood there was need for these things in that area. The people in my constituency received refrigerators and stoves. This was the kind of damage that really came from the flood. If he would have taken the time Mr. Speaker to move around then he would have seen it. And he misleads again Mr. Speaker when he tells you that this was only in the urban areas and in the rural areas no assistance was given, Well the floods affected people in the rural areas as well too and even in those rural areas the assistance was given. The minister of works Mr. speaker to get back the roads on stream and so on all the culverts that had to be put in and so on Mr Speaker, can he not see that, that is a serious expense?”
