Is Belize Prepared for Mass Cuban Influx?

Costa Rican and Belizean officials are in negotiations over the fate of thousands of Cuban refugees stranded in Costa Rica for weeks where they were detained as they made their way to the United States through Central America and Mexico. Their journey took them first to Ecuador, then on to Colombia, Panama then Costa Rica. From there they attempted to cross into Nicaragua but were turned back. Guatemala has also refused them entry so the Costa Ricans are trying to convince the Belize government to allow them passage into the country.  The thousands are trying to take advantage of the US’s policy of “wet foot, dry foot” under which they would be granted legal status once they set foot in the US. P.M. Barrow said that on Wednesday he was contacted by the Costa Rican President to see if he would be willing to accommodate the transit of the Cubans as a matter of humanitarianism.

“As I understood it the deal would be that however many we think we could handle if we agreed would come land at the PGIA in planes that the international corporation for migration would pay for would get onto busses that IOM would also pay for. The Mexicans would give us an assurance that they would be immediately processed at the border with Chetumal and then allowed to enter Mexico for purposes of transit ultimately to the US. I said to him as a matter of courtesy and fairness that he should send something in writing and what we can expect from the Mexicans and what we could expect from IOM. And that I would raise the matter in cabinet on Tuesday after we got his paper and after we would have done some preliminary checking with the Mexicans, with the Cubans. We need to know how the Cubans would feel about all this. He said, no we will give these people exit visas and he said it is not a problem, He said he would send them the documentation of his proposal and he would also ask his foreign minister to speak to foreign minister Elrington so that additional details that he may not be able to furnish me immediately could be provided.”

  1. Ali BaBarrow, a god amongst men says:

When I say something in writing, I am talking deposited and cleared checks, or a brief case of U.S. $100 bills, unmarked at a location I designate, not necessarily in Belize.

My cabinet members my be sloppy, stupid and loyal; I am not, don’t play me.

  2. CEO says:

None of this makes any sense! Planes fly to Mexico also!

Why the hell not just fly them directly to Mexico if this is their destination? Why are we playing middlemen brokering this deal!

This translates to another 1/2 hour of flying time to get to some part of Mexico.
