Investigation into Drug Plane Continues…Still Very Little Known

There are still only few details available on the Cessna single-engine aircraft with tail number YZ3241 which was found in an isolated area behind Spanish Lookout, Cayo District. The Cessna 210 landed on Tuesday near Aguacate Lagoon after one in the morning and soon after it was torched presumably to destroy the evidence. Its seared vestiges were discovered by the police later in the morning. Residents in the area report that they heard the plane circling in the area followed by the movement of vehicles.  The small plane was used to transport illicit cargo into the country but its origin is not confirmed and an official investigation remains open. Police have not provided any details but part of the inquiry is being conducted by the Civil Aviation Department.  Upon learning of the downed aircraft, an accident investigator was immediately dispatched to the scene.  That individual is working closely with the Belize Police Department and will be providing useful information that can assist in tracing the origins of the mysterious flight.  This morning, Director of Civil Aviation, Lindsay Garbutt, gave an update on what has been learned so far, in respect of the Cessna as well as on other investigations that are in progress, including a Tropic Air plane that went down in the sea when it was heading to Honduras.

“My accident investigator Mr. Shawn Young was on the scene almost immediately as we were informed of this and we found that there was a plane that had landed and whoever landed it burnt it as a means of destroying evidence.  We are presently working with the police department to give them all the technical information we can, in terms of what type of aircraft, trying to trace the registration so we can provide that information and the police part of the procedure can go on.”

“It has been a while since there were also two local planes that were caught in separate accidents, incidents.  Has there been any closure to that in terms of the investigation or is that still ongoing?”

Lindsay Garbutt

“Some aspect of the investigation is still ongoing and we, when I talk about building capacity, we continually build the capacity of the department so that our people can work with the industry to ensure that it is as accident free as possible.  However, like I said then, we are running a significant amount of operations every year, almost two hundred thousand operations a year of Tropic and Maya and the others.  And I think their safety record can be compared favorably with the safety records of any airlines anywhere in the world.  So while there were two incidents that we continue to investigate, we also think that they deserve kudos for the safety with which they have operated so many operations for so many years.”

Reliable sources have informed News Five that that the Cessna 210 Centurion aircraft was indeed used for the transshipment of narcotics into the country.
