CSEC’s Regional Top Performers Meet Prime Minister Dean Barrow

The most brilliant students from across the region are in Belize for the regional award ceremony of top performers for the 2015 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examinations. The program starts with the opening of the forty-seventh Meeting of Council and Presentation of Regional Top Awardees on Thursday night at the Biltmore Plaza followed by CXC Governance Meetings and regional top awards ceremony on Friday at the Radisson. Since Monday, the top achievers in both the CXC and CAPE examinations have been getting a tour of the Jewel. They’ve met the Governor General and government officials and have visited landmarks in Belize. Today, they met Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Minister of Education Patrick Faber at the ITVET Compound in Belize.

“We are pleased to be in such distinguished academic company. it is exciting because when I get the chance to—as you’ve heard, I’ve been Minister of Education for a while—but when I get the chance to do the ceremonies of giving awards and so on, you see young people—I see them at the primary level, at the secondary level; I see them at the tertiary—and you get to see them blossom and become a productive citizen of Belize. And that for me is very exciting when you could identify the top performers and watch them and track them and I’m sure in your respective countries that is exactly what has been happening. I’m sure it is an absolutely proud moment for your parents and your families and the people who support you.”

“I gather that you are all super achievers, phenomenal achievers and clearly the entire region is extremely proud of you. I only heard that you topped the CXCs with twenty-one ones and one two. And I do think you have the makings of a politician. Why I thought you had the makings of a politician…I note that you were very quick to point out the one subject in which you did not get a one is something like technical drawing. And while you didn’t say much more, the suggestion clearly was that’s not worth getting a one in. I also ma’am was very impressed with what you had to say…the ease with which you spoke and of course, you as Brandon, had very nice things to say about Belize. So again you clearly are a very much a Caribbean young person or a budding politician—knowing how to butter-up your host.”

“It is a wonderful event for us to celebrate. We are glad that this year you have come to beautiful Belize. We are happy to host you and we hope that you have a wonderful time. I congratulate Mister Cumberbatch as well and his staff who is here with us. I look forward to meeting the Chair as well of the Regional CXC Council, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies who is a close partner with us here as we try to improve the education system. So it is a great time for us to be hosting such a distinguished guest.”

Last week at the Ecumenical College in Dangriga, Belizean students were honored for their distinction in the CSEC locally.
