Another Daring Attempt on Big Tom’s Life

Kenneth "Big Tom" Flowers

After a relative calm, there were three shootings over the weekend in the city. The first was a brazen daylight shooting on Saturday afternoon on Orange Street near the entrance to Taylor’s Alley. Notorious figure in the criminal underworld, Kenneth Flowers, aka “Big Tom”, was targeted by gunmen who are reportedly affiliates of the Taylor’s Alley Gang. Sometime around one in the afternoon, the thirty-eight year old was allegedly fired upon and according to witnesses in the area, Flowers managed to escape a barrage of bullets that was fired in his direction. He reportedly escaped in a car near the Fish Market on Vernon Street. Police were quick on the scene and apprehended the parties involved. Today, Senior Superintendent Chester Williams did not offer much details but said that following their detention, an intervention was held with the men this morning.

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“The police…we are looking into a situation and I will say that this morning, myself and Miss Finnegan, we had a lengthy intervention session with factions from the Taylor’s Alley Group as well as Big Tom. As you would know they were one gang; they were all associates, but apparently something went wrong between them and that sparked an incident over the weekend. Police were on top of it, I must say. The police were in the area and responded very quickly. The parties involved were apprehended by the police and both parties are not requesting any court action so in terms of proceeding the matter to court, we are unable to do so. But with a view to try and diffuse whatever problem may persist between them, we kept them over the weekend and this morning, we had an intervention session with them. I’d want to think that the session was very successful. Both parties state their position and pledged that whatever it was between them, they will put it aside and move on as they used to be. So we believe that that problem will be diffused; nonetheless, we continue to maintain our police presence in the Taylor’s Alley area as well as the PIV area because at the end of the day, we are not taking anything for granted. We maintain our vigilance despite the fact that we may have done interventions because we do not want to be caught with our guards down.”

“Can you give us from an official standpoint what really transpired? I know you said that it was between factions of the same group, but could you talk to us about what transpired. We understand that Big Tom was shot at by several persons, but it wasn’t confirmed so we want to get that from you.”

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams

“There is no report or information of him being shot at by several persons. As I said, there was an incident between them and I will say no more.”

The last time Flowers was before the court was earlier this year in June when he was sentenced to six months imprisonment for Driving a Motor Vehicle Without a Valid Driver’s License. But his attorney managed to get a stay of that sentence and he was then released.

I feel sorry for Belizeans and I’ve said this time and time again. What damn intervention!? They broke the law by discharging what I can guarantee you were unlicensed firearms and it can also be deemed attempted murder and aggravated assault. They should be jailed! Careful that LEGAL CERTIFICATE and the clamour for television and publicity don’t get to your head Chester. Yes, I capitalized LEGAL CERTIFICATE because the standards of being able to practice law in Belize are so low now. Many of you are returning with a LEGAL CERTIFICATE which is below accepted standards. Bottom line is, you all didn’t make the grade and didn’t pass but it’s now being accepted in Belize. Chester couldn’t even get a “C” in some of his classes at SJC Junior College and I can tell you one teacher, most of all, gave him a “C” so he can move on. From Natalia, Cayetano, many of you touting yourself as being attorneys have returned with a LEGAL CERTIFICATE. When you want to know who actually passed the bar, look at the difference in the qualifications of the two young women who were featured in Amandala a couple weeks ago. Note, LLB. I digress
