Cohune Walk Police Substation Reopened

Residents of Cohune Walk are tonight resting easy and are a little safer with the opening of a police substation in their neck of the woods.  The housing community has been plagued by a number of burglaries recently, prompting Belmopan police to reestablish their presence in the area.  Superintendent Howell Gillett has been instrumental in reaching out to the business community for assistance with the renovation project.

“Well the precinct has been here before my time but it has been dilapidated, so much so that the officer had to be removed from here.  It was leaking and all that so we enlisted the support of the community, particularly the Belize Social Security Board who provided all the materials to rehabilitate the building and also Mr. Joe Mena who single-handedly provided the finance for the labor.  So we are very, very happy that they did contribute and that the community of Cohune Walk will now be safer with a police officer posted here at least twelve hours on a daily basis.”

“Talk to us about this area, did you all see the need for increased police presence particularly in this area?”

Supt. Howell Gillett

“Of course.  Some months ago there was an increase in burglaries.  What happened, to give you a backdrop to this community, this is a community that is a working class community.  People go to work on a daily basis leaving their homes unattended so the need for the police is really there.  So that police officer will not only be inside the police station, he will be here for brief moments but he will be out patrolling in the community of Cohune Walk daily.  So that should help us to remove some of the ills that were existent prior to the building being upgraded.”
