Fathers Behind Bars for Drug Trafficking

Walter Beaton

Tonight, two Belize City fathers who are sole providers of their children are behind bars after both were convicted of drug trafficking. Two years ago in May 2013, Walter Beaten and Kirk Dougal were found with twenty-five point one kilograms or about fifty-five point three pounds of cannabis stashed inside a van at the George Price Highway checkpoint. A bag containing the weed was found in the back passenger’s seat of the vehicle in which both men were travelling.   Their trial began on January thirteen, 2015 and concluded today when Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser handed down her ruling.

Kirk Dougal

Beaton and Dougal were found guilty of the offense of drug trafficking with intent to supply to another person for the purpose of drug trafficking.  Beaton was slapped with three years plus the mandatory minimum fine of ten thousand dollars while Dougal was sentenced to a four-year prison term and fined ten thousand dollars. Both men must pay the fine by April thirtieth, 2016, or spend three additional years in prison.  In mitigation, both men begged the court for leniency.  Walter has eight children and Dougal has six. Both have been before the court previously; Beaton has a conviction for harm while Dougal has as many as fourteen cases for drug related offenses.
