Police Search for Abelino Matamoro Following Fatal Hit & Run

An all points bulletin has been issued for the arrest of Abelino Matamoro, following a fatal hit and run incident over the weekend in southern Belize.  On Friday evening at around five-thirty, the police headed to the Southern Highway near miles twenty-three and twenty-four, the scene of a traffic accident.  There, they spotted a Meilun motorcycle lying on the right hand side of the road, facing the direction of Santa Rosa Village.  An initial investigation into the mishap revealed that Matamoro struck a pedestrian, later identified as forty-seven-year-old Carlota Contreras as she was standing on the side of the road.  Despite being rushed to the Southern Regional and later transferred to the K.H.M.H., the Honduran national succumbed to extensive head and body injuries on Saturday evening.  News Five spoke by phone with Superintendent Cristobal Valerio of the Intermediate Southern Formation.

On the phone: Supt. Cristobal Valerio, Intermediate Southern Formation

“The matter is under investigation at this moment.  What happened is that the police were called to an area between mile twenty-three and twenty-four and on arrival there they saw a motorcycle with damages.  They were informed that a lady had been knocked down and was taken to the Southern Regional [Hospital] and that is all we have.  The person who they mentioned was involved in [the incident], who was riding the motorbike; they are unable to find him at this time.  So the investigation continues.”

“Has there been a bulletin issued for this person’s arrest seeing as though a name has been put forward?”

On the phone: Supt. Cristobal Valerio

“A bulletin has been put forward.”

Isani Cayetano

“Where exactly did this incident happen?”

On the phone: Supt. Cristobal Valerio

“Between miles twenty-three and twenty-four on the Southern Highway.”

Isani Cayetano

“Okay, this would be in the area of Buena Vista.  Correct?”

On the phone: Supt. Cristobal Valerio

“More likely in the area of Santa Cruz.”

Isani Cayetano

“In terms of the police in their investigation, speaking with any of the witnesses or anyone who may have seen what transpired.  What are you guys getting so far?”

On the phone: Supt. Cristobal Valerio

“We have to interview several persons and what we got is that the person hit the lady and he ran away.  He left the bike there and he ran away but they could not provide a perfect description as to who we might be looking for.”

Isani Cayetano

“Is it clear that this individual may also be a resident of Santa Cruz or is he from elsewhere?”

On the phone: Supt. Cristobal Valerio

“We cannot establish that at this time.  We were only told it’s a male person of Hispanic descent.  We were able to establish a name, a Carlotta Contreras who is a Honduran national, forty-seven-years-old, residing in Santa Cruz Village.  We were made to understand that she died on Saturday as a result of the injuries she received in the incident.”
