City hospital robbed, Cayo man shot

Police have detained two people and are looking for another in connection with the holdup of Universal Health Services over the weekend. According to the institution’s manager of supplies, on Saturday he was in his office when two men wearing masks and brandishing handguns walked in and demanded money. The manager says he opened the safe and the robbers helped themselves to an undisclosed amount of money. But apparently that wasn’t enough and one of the jackers proceeded to pistol whip the manager before taking his gold chain and medal. The robbers also relieved the unarmed security guard of a gold ring before escaping in a green Toyota taxi. The getaway car has since been impounded by authorities who continue to investigate the possibility that Saturday’s robbery involved at least one other person. Meanwhile, in San Ignacio, Police are investigating the shooting of a taxi driver from Esperanza village. Forty-seven year old Jose Tejeda was shot in the right forearm and abdomen on Sunday night near the Branch Mouth area of the twin towns. Tejeda told police he was returning from a charter trip to Branch Mouth, when upon reaching an area about two hundred yards from the junction with Joseph Andrews Drive, he saw branches on the road. Tejeda said that as he slowed the vehicle down, he noticed a tall dark skinned person coming out of the bushes. Tejeda says he did not wait around to find out what he wanted and sped off, but that the as yet unidentified man produced a gun and fired several shots at the departing vehicle causing Tejeda’s injury. Tejeda was taken to the San Ignacio Hospital but has since been transferred to the KHMH where he is listed in critical condition. While that is his version of events, News 5 understands that authorities have noticed inconsistencies in the story that need further analysis. One question apparently bugging police is that if Tejeda was shot while driving, why are there no bullet holes in the car?
