Arlie Avilez’s Family Speaks Out

Arlie Avilez

A criminal investigation remains open into the death of Arlie Andrew Avilez, who succumbed to injuries received during a physical altercation in mid-October. Today, his grieving family is simply trying to have their questions answered.  It was not until his sibling visited the K.H.M.H. while her daughter was hospitalized that she learned of the demise of her brother, Andy.  Despite being told that he had been discharged several days after stumbling upon him inside a medical ward, the sister would later discover that he had passed away on October twenty-fifth.  Avilez told the court before he passed that he was badly beaten by Chinese hotelier, Chen Wen Hua, on October ninth.  Today, News Five sat with the Avilez family and his sister described the moment she found out that her brother was dead.

Voice of: Andy Avilez’s Sister

“A Filipino male nurse, he knows me because I go to the hospital, like I said, and he asked me what’s wrong and I told him I was looking for my brother.  So he said, “just give me a minute, let me check something.”  He went into a draw and took out a blue book and he took like ten minutes going through the book and then he said, “Girl, I have bad news.”  I said, “What’s it?”  He said, “Your brother is dead.”  I said, “You gotta be kidding me!”  He said, “Yes, your brother is dead from the twenty-fifth of October.”  I said “Oh my God” and I burst out crying and the doctor who told me that he was discharged, she came and she hug up me and she apologized.  She said sorry, it was a mix up.  The other nurses, everybody gathered around me and were sympathizing with me and it was really, really hard for me.  I had to go to the police station to make a report and then when I went to the police station they didn’t even know, they took him in on the fifteenth or the fourteenth, they took him in but they said they didn’t even know that the guy had died.  So I had to give them a report too and then they took me to the morgue, that’s Monday, to do the autopsy but they couldn’t do it because the doctor wasn’t there so I had to do it the Tuesday.  So they did the Tuesday evening and I buried him the Wednesday.  That’s how come I know my brother died.”
