…Denounces Malicious Attack on Fellow Senator

Mark Lizarraga

Newly appointed U.D.P. Senator Francine Burns has been the subject of a malicious online attack.  On Monday, a post on Facebook which shows a nude image, purportedly that of the young lawyer, began circulating.  The widespread distribution of the screenshot prompted a number of organizations, including the National Women’s Commission and the Women’s Issues Network of Belize to issue releases on the deliberately harmful assault.  This afternoon, fellow senator Mark Lizarraga spoke of the incident, condemning the attack and calling for legislation to regulate such online activity.

Mark Lizarraga, Newly Re-elected Business Senator

“We have seen increasingly in this country of ours that elections get nasty.  It becomes personal, whenever you represent people it’s almost as that your views, your persona, your ideas, people don’t look at that.  They attack your personality.  I believe we should all denounce that type of behavior.  I suggest that we even need, in today’s day and age, we need to look at legislation to discourage this type of activity.  I think we should put penalties in place, we need to stiffen penalties for people that slander, you know, especially [since] it’s so easy to do in social media.  And people get hurt.  You hurt people not only emotionally, you know, but sometimes you hurt them for life.  We have seen where people have actually died as a result of this type of slander and attacks, uncalled for.  So we denounce it totally, totally, you know.  We should all condemn this type of behavior and denounce it.  I’m so sorry to see that we have stooped to such a low in our country to have to do that, you know.  So I am hoping that we see legislation that will address those matters, that type of slander and personal attack soon.”
