Will Cordel Hyde Replace Francis Fonseca as New P.U.P. Leader?

Cordel Hyde

The biggest single issue on the political front in this week following the 2015 general election is the leadership vacuum in the Opposition People’s United Party. The day after a devastating loss, P.U.P. Leader Francis Fonseca announced that he would be stepping down. That’s thrown the gates wide open, and prior to today, unofficial reports indicated that at least four successful P.U.P. candidates wanted in. Today, the party held its first national Executive Meeting post election, and we’ll have the official lowdown a little later in our newscast. But first, there is official confirmation from one prospective leader. Lake Independence area representative Cordel Hyde told News Five this afternoon that he has been receiving a lot of requests and support from the P.U.P. faithful all across the country. He says based on that, a bid for leadership is most definitely on the table at this point.

“I can tell you that we’re seriously considering it at this moment. We’re talking to a lot of people. It’s a big deal, but it’s one we’re taking very seriously. We don’t have to make that decision today, tomorrow or the day after. The truth be told…at this meeting that’s coming up right now there’s a good chance that they will give us until the middle of December to get in our names, and a Convention won’t be due until early in the first quarter.”

“Cordel what would be the challenges that you can see right off with you putting your hat in the ring?”

Cordel Hyde

“I prefer to look at the opportunities rather than the challenges. I think that it’s a big task and it’s one that frankly speaking I am humbled by. For a young boy that used to walk barefooted on Sarstoon Street in Lake Independence it is an unlikely journey. So I’m very humbled and I take it seriously but we have a lot of people to talk to outside and inside the party before we take that plunge.”

“Do you think that you’d be able to translate that charisma and star power you have in Lake I to the rest of the country?”

Cordel Hyde

“Well winning elections is not rocket science really. It’s about hard work. It’s about grinding. It’s about putting the party in a position to win…about coming up with policies and programs that will affect positively the vast majority of the people and not some. The party has won many elections before. It’s not magic. We can do it. But it’s about bringing all the bodies together…all our talents and forces so that we can be a united party and put our best foot forward.”
