No Post Mortem Into P.U.P.’s Defeat at Polls, Full Steam Ahead

Henry Charles Usher

Those interviews with P.U.P. representatives were done at Independence Hall, where the P.U.P. held its National Executive meeting following a luncheon with leader Francis Fonseca. Chairman Henry Charles Usher told the media that there was no post-mortem because the Party is focused ahead. Three items were on today’s agenda, starting with a message from outgoing leader Francis Fonseca.

“The second item on the agenda was the framework for the national convention and let me say outright that we will have a national convention. There was some question as to whether it would have been a special convention to elect a party leader or a national convention. It was decided by the majority of the national executive that we will have a national convention. The date of the national convention would be the thirty-first of January, that is a Sunday in 2015. We will have a deadline for nominations for the open post for December fifteenth, 2015 and of course the deadline of the delegates list to come in around the same time. By the constitution, it has to be thirty days prior to the date of the national convention. Last item on the agenda was the parliamentary appointments and for the joint sitting of the House on Friday, the honourable Francis Fonseca will continue to be the leader of the Opposition in the House. And the three senators that were nominated, prior to the election, will once again hold their posts as senators in the joint sitting until we have a new leader in place. In a nutshell, in a convention, all posts are open except for a few that the constitution lists, including the Secretary General, the chairman of the regional caucuses; the chairman of the units, meaning the marshals, the BYM, the women’s group, the ODS and the immediate past party leader. Other than those, all other posts are open for election.”

“Will you all still have five deputies?”

Henry Charles Usher

“The constitution speaks of four deputies, Jules. We go with what the constitution says. That is up to amendment after we have a new leader, but we have to abide by what the constitution says.”

Usher says that all indications at this point are that the transition to new leadership will be a peaceful one, though anyone familiar with politics would know that is certainly subject to change.
