Alleged Nude Photo of Newly Appointed U.D.P. Senator Goes Viral

The recent appointment of attorney Francine Burns as a senator for the United Democratic Party was welcomed news on Monday, as it was generally accepted that the Barrow administration was attempting to put women in top positions.  The young lawyer, however, is under fire tonight, following the widespread distribution of an image on social media that purportedly depicts her in the nude.  The internet has been alive with discussion and the screenshot from a three and a half minute video itself has gone viral.  But, there is outrage tonight, as various organizations, including the Women’s Issues Network of Belize, WINBelize, and the National Women’s Commission, are lashing out over the malicious and graphic post.  Late this evening, the NWC issued a release stating, “that such malicious actions falsely seeks to discredit and demean Burns’ character and downplay her achievement as a young attorney.” The U.D.P.’s National Organization of Women has also issued a statement condemning the sexual exploitation of the newly appointed parliamentarian.  All of this while Burns herself has denied the claim that the image floating around on Facebook is actually a nude photo of her. In a post today, Burns wrote that, “The fact remains that the individual in the photograph is not me, so the acceptance or crucifixion of my character on the premise that it is, is initially misleading. Prior to my appointment to the Senate, there were no such attacks on my person, because grounds such as the one currently at the forefront remain nonexistent. This was not the release or revelation of my private life; this is an absolute fallacy.” News Five spoke with Executive Director Carolyn Reynolds of WINBelize who says that the deliberately harmful post is a violation of Burns’ rights as a woman.

“We were made aware of this image that has been floating around and we contacted our member agencies to ask if it is okay for us to do a press release because we have not really confirmed if it is Senator Burns.  But from the article that has been floating around we based our press release on that article and the member agencies agreed that we should send out a press release because as women’s organizations we do not condone this type of behavior.  It is one that looking [at it] our work is based on human rights and so this is violating the rights of women on a whole and as the network we do not condone such behavior.”

“If indeed it is this particular individual in question, do you believe that this kind of negative exposure stands to harm her career as either a senator or as an attorney?”

Carolyn Reynolds

“If there is the network on a whole and the other women’s organization as well as persons in the government and those other stakeholders that look at issues affecting women and especially, violating the rights of people on a whole.  Having that, everyone coming together to speak out on it, I don’t believe that it will affect her career in any way.”

I am not condoning attacks to women, but where were Women’s Issues Network of Belize, WINBelize, and the National Women’s Commission, when the House of Representative was used as a forum to attack female member of the House of Representative?

  2. Elston Grant says:

    Lawd have mercy

  3. carlos says:

Its lone hypocrecy.. When the minister in the house of representatives abused a female representative did you or other organization spoke against the male representative? NO because you did not care.

  4. kmh says:

This old strategy again? At least other photos were legit not this Photoshop rubbish. This woman must be perceived as real threat if they go to this much trouble to try and discredit her

  5. Belizean@ heart says:

  6. Woman says:

Why, now make an issue, when this has been happening in OW for a quite while, a lot of young females were exploited and were criticized of such behaviors. Were these young woman were defended? no they were not. Just because its the senator now this is being address. come one treat woman equally. I have seen a young lady commit suicide last year due to the same reason, her pictures were all over facebook, but did the women committee made any press release or even showed support to her no. A number of girls in OW have been exposed with nude pictures and no one did gave them no moral support but rather they were buried. but i am in support to Ms Burns, and i am very proud of her.

  7. Belizean Youth says:

I love this out pour of support for the Senator the women of this nation must stand up together and demand it not be done again. But I would like to know where were these Woman Organizations when the then Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia was attached by the Hon Michael Finnegan in of all places the House of Representatives. How come they didn’t step up and supported her, when the Minister of Education Patrick Faber abused his wife those are just two that come to memory but lets be honest lets not be partisan and call a spade a spade if you are true demand that all women of Belize be respected by all especially does that hold public office we must lead by example! Over the weeks, months and years to come let’s work together to build a structure for our women to be respected equally and not when it benefits one political party. I also await the People’s United Party United Women’s Group – UWG to public condemn this distasteful action against one of our women and against women on a whole.

  8. Al says:

As usual everything has double standards. Sending out a release condemning the report about the senator has the potential of getting themselves some political favors in the future, but putting out a release about nameless poor girls who has nothing to give them is not worthy of their release.

  9. Joe Blank says:

Shameful but this smells like payback. But King Dean and the thug party are good at degrading women, esp Ghetto Super Star Finnegan. None of ye hypocrites cried for Dolores. Karma is a real bitch. Poor Ms. Burns still. Now you know what it’s like to be on the receiving end.
