Belize Progressive Party on Election Results

The general elections held last Wednesday was contested by three political parties—the People’s United Party, the United Democratic Party and the Belize Progressive Party. Considering itself a third option, the B.P.P. were able to muster just over two thousand votes cumulatively; Orange Walk Central candidate for the B.P.P., a former U.D.P. mayor, Phillip De La Fuente got the highest number of votes… a total of four hundred and ninety-three for the party. Today, party chairman Paco Smith told News Five that while they were presently surprised, they are not satisfied with their performance for the general elections.

“Thank you to everyone who voted for the B.P.P. we garnered over two thousand odd votes cumulatively throughout the country. We’d also like to say thank you very much to the donors that contributed. Yes in fact, we started…well we wouldn’t say we started a little late because one of the things we’d like to get across…although the brand, Belize Progressive Party (B.P.P.) is new, the principals involved in this have been in this alternative political trouble for the past at least fifteen years. And I am speaking specifically about Bobby Lopez, who is our representative for the Belize Rural South. Also the political leader, Patrick Rogers and myself…we’ve been around. So in terms of the B.P.P. itself, we are not novices per say, but we are a new brand. In terms of our performance, I would characterize it as being presently surprising because we launched the party on the first of October and it has been a little over a month. So the response from the general public is very much appreciated. And I would like to send a message to all Belizeans—both at home and abroad—that the B.P.P. is here to stay. If you feel that we are going to fade away, you’ve got another thing coming because we only shall move forward. We are not into moral victories, but the fact remains that we had a very good showing. We have to be realistic. Let us just say that at every given opportunity that the electorate has the chance to voice their opinion and let their perspective be heard—and I am talking specifically with regards to elections—the B.P.P. shall be there. Whether it is municipal, whether it is general or what have you, we will be there and we are only going forward. So in essence we are presently surprised but we are not satisfied with the outcome.”
