Gapi Vega is Minister of Agriculture. Was He Demoted?

Dean Barrow

Of all the shuffles and tweaking which accompanied the appointment of the new Cabinet, on the face of it the title of biggest loser would have to go to Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega. He presided over the Ministry of Natural Resources for two terms, but that giant portfolio has been stripped from him, replaced by Fisheries, Forestry and Sustainable Development. The PM maintains that it is not a demotion, but was actually done at the request of Vega.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“He had actually asked me to be relieved of the Lands Ministry maybe six, eight months or so before the last election and I asked him to stay on to see out the term.”

Gaspar Vega, Deputy Prime Minister

“There was a time when the Lands Department was just getting to be too much…too much peer pressure, the public demanding for more. It’s a difficult department. It was one of the worst departments government had before 2008 and we have made substantial advances but I still don’t think it is where all of us expect it to be. And at times it’s just overbearing.”

Reporter

“Sir the Prime Minister has said that it is no demotion. But do you think you could have gotten another powerful ministry because you actually gained ground in the north which is what you set out to do.”

Gaspar Vega

Gaspar Vega

“Yes I gained ground in the north and I think the Prime Minister realizes it and acknowledges it and the decision that he made was to the best of his ability I’m certain, and we all respect whatever decision he makes.”

Reporter

“But the ministries you got were not by choice. You didn’t choose those ministries?”

Gaspar Vega

“No…I don’t think anybody got to choose their ministries?”

Reporter

“Sir…can I ask you point-blank? Do you have aspirations to be Prime Minister of this country? This is the Prime Minister’s third term and he will have to step down sometime in this term.”

Gaspar Vega

“I think it’s premature for me to answer that.”

Reporter

“If you do have those aspirations and it seems clear you do. Do you feel that another Ministry would have given you more leverage?”

Gaspar Vega

“I don’t know if you know my history in my constituency, but my strength is my personal relationship with my constituents, and I would carry out the same if I were to lead the Party. If I need a lot of money to get support from someone then it is clear I’m in the wrong business.”
