‘Papa’ Mena Clears Up Election Night Comments

Frank Mena

Frank ‘Papa’ Mena, the U.D.P.’s Area Representative for Dangriga, has weathered two storms in quick succession – a bi-election followed by the general election last week. For his success on the ground Mena has been appointed Minister of State to the Prime Minister. Aside from that political success, Mena has come under scrutiny for comments made on election night – comments perceived as racist and inflammatory. Today, Mena told us nothing could be further from the truth, and while he spoke in anger, he only meant to say that the culture of buying votes must come to an end.

Frank Mena, Area Representative, Dangriga

“It was misconstrued intentionally, and those who misconstrued it had their own intentions and that is fine. I am a Garifuna man and a proud Garifuna man. I have represented my culture and people know Papa Mena across the country because of the job that I was doing on KREM representing my country. So in terms of that I was reiterating what those in money normally say in the south, that we have our price. Well I wanted them to understand that I am not what they say I am. I am a Garifuna man and I don’t have a price. I am telling my people, I am appealing to my people not to subscribe to those doctrines. That’s the bottom line, but it got twisted and turned. I am a Garifuna man and a proud one and I don’t need anybody’s approval to be a Garifuna man. I am a proud one and I stand up. So when the twist and the turn and so I am telling my people simply…listen we are not for sale. We have to stand tall and stand firm. Some crazy things happen…like wah youth you’re sending to school comes and asks for money to vote. These are some of the things but we have to address. I am saying that if this is the process then I don’t know where I’m heading to. It’s a slippery slope. But why is it that when we speak on these issues we have to tiptoe. I will continue to stand up for my people and stand up for what I believe in.”
