Barrow Says G.O.B. Spending Influenced Results of Elections

Dean Barrow

Any analysis of the election results where the U.D.P.’s success is concerned will be for the political pundits, but certainly perception is that the results were assisted generously by the inflows of Petrocaribe monies. The Prime Minister doesn’t shy away from that perception, but claims that all the spending by G.O.B. was nothing out of the ordinary.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The government spending which was normal course spending on infrastructure, on development projects, on social programs clearly helped because these were what demonstrated that the U.D.P. was delivering and producing for the people of this country. I’m saying that there was nothing out of the ordinary about the spending on delivery of goods and services in principle. That’s what governments do. There are times when you are able to spend more than at other times. It is a fact that our coffers were in excellent shape, allowing us more latitude certainly than we had in 2012. And among the contributing factors to our overflowing coffers indeed was the Petrocaribe program which this government unlocked in consequence of its diplomacy, in consequence of its good sense, in consequence of its ability. It didn’t just fall from the sky like manna from heaven. Again, that is what good governments are supposed to do…find the tools, find the resources to put them in a position to deliver properly for the citizenry.”
