Police Mourn Loss of Sgt. Orlando Cruz

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

On Sunday morning, police officers attached to Precinct Four of the Belize City Police Department responded to the scene of a fatal traffic accident on the Phillip Goldson Highway, just past the Haulover Bridge. Lying dead on the ground, a short distance from a motorcycle laid the body of one of their own, thirty-eight year old Orlando Cruz, a sergeant of police and the deputy officer commanding the Hattieville Police Station. Cruz had lost control of the motorcycle as he traveled north and crashed into the guardrail just past the bridge; his body was found in a ditch off the rails. The untimely death of the stellar officer, says Rural Eastern Division Commander, Senior Superintendent Edward Broaster, is devastating to the department.

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster, Regional Commander, Rural Eastern Division

“The death of Sergeant Orlando Cruz. On Saturday morning at about two-twenty a.m. we received a call that there was a traffic accident at the Haulover Bridge in the rural eastern division jurisdiction. The Belama police responded and discovered the body of Orlando Cruz. At this time we would like to extend our condolences to the family and to all the members of the Belize Police Department, his friends. It is an unfortunate situation, it’s an untimely situation. Mister Cruz has been in this department for seventeen years plus; I believe he joined the department on the second of February 1998. He was the deputy commanding officer of Hattieville precinct and he was an excellent supervisor and commander. He will be greatly missed. Apparently he collided on his motorcycle into the guardrail just after he crossed the bridge where he fell to his demise. The post mortem was conducted this morning and we are continuing our investigation into the matter to get a conclusion on that matter of our brother, Sergeant Orlando Cruz. From what we’ve seen on the scene, his bike was intact and there were tire marks very close to the guardrail which indicates that he came into contact with the guardrail and he fell to his demise.”

“Could you speak to the extent of the injuries he sustained?”

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

“The injuries sustained as far as we know it was from his lower extremities up to his chest; internal bleeding, ruptured liver and so forth.”

Cruz leaves behind one son and the police intend to set up a trust fund for the minor.
