…Eamon Courtenay Says It’s A Political Strategy by the U.D.P.

Eamon Courtenay

According to Courtenay, the matter is being treated as a political strategy by the United Democratic Party, a blatant attempt to gain mileage from the timely announcement.  Courtenay reiterates that had the UK intended to take up the issue and join forces with Belize, an official announcement would have been made in parliament by a British politician.  Such has not been the case.

Isani Cayetano

“As a former foreign minister what is your position on or your opinion on the timeliness of this all, in terms of the political impression being made?”

Eamon Courtenay, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs

“Well, clearly the United Democratic Party is attempting to make political mileage and mischief out of the timing of the visit of the lieutenant general.  As I say, we don’t want to make too much of it, the British are very good at making things happen at certain times to make an impression that certain things are what they are not.  I would describe it as an excellent case of British negative reality.”

“Now, we know the old phrase perfidious Albion.  Is this a case, you think, of the British trying to somehow meddle, perhaps not so subtly, in the domestic affairs of Belize?”

Eamon Courtenay

“As I said Jules, the issue today is not the British.  It is not the fact that they have announced an increase in their presence in Belize at this time, you know.  It is not ironic what they did in 1993.  I think we should remember in 1993 they announced the end of the defense guarantee just before the election and Mr. Price tried his best to get them to reverse that.  That was at a time when we called an early election.  Here it is that we have an early election called again and just by mere coincidence they will have us believe that the general has come to Belize to make this announcement.  I think Belizeans should not focus on that announcement.  I don’t think we should focus and spend much time on the timing of the announcement, if the British want to make this announcement at this time, they are doing that to serve their interest.  The important thing for us as Belizeans is to underscore that the British increase in presence here gives the People’s United Party and does not give the Belizeans any assurance that if Mr. Morales when he becomes president gets excited and quixotic and attempts to move militarily against Belize that the British now have given us a defense guarantee.  Had there been a change in posture of the British presence here, it would been announced by a British politician.  It would have been announced in the British parliament.  It would not have been by Lieutenant General Everard.”

We’ll have more from Courtenay on the forecast of Wednesday’s election later on in the newscast.

Whether politics or not, Belize is still a British Colony, and as a child gets independence from the parent, they will still be protected somewhat, so Belize is. Anen, we have someone having our back instead of stabbing it.
