Still No Bail for Keyren Tzib

Keyren Tzib

Twenty-four-year-old Keyren Tzib, on remand for manslaughter, will have to wait until Friday for a decision on her bail application status to be handed down. The bail application hearing has stretched out over four weeks, as Justice Troadio Gonzalez hears evidence to determine whether Tzib would be a danger to herself or others if granted bail. Today that determination hinged on the testimony of psychiatrist Richard Alovera who evaluated Tzib on September thirteenth. The testimony was sensitive and since the matter has not yet been decided we’ll be frugal with the details, but we can say that Tzib has been diagnosed as bipolar with psychosis, and that condition is linked to an alleged rape she suffered in 2011 while at her workplace. Because of that link, Tzib’s psychosis would likely be triggered by sexual, emotional or physical abuse. In a nutshell, Alovera testified that Tzib could live a normal life with medication and therapy, but that her condition would get worse if she were incarcerated at the Belize Central Prison. The prosecution objected strenuously to bail being granted, and made reference to a recent incident at that facility where Tzib allegedly threatened an inmate. As we’ve said, the matter is a sensitive one, and Justice Gonzalez decided to adjourn until Friday when he will then hand down a written decision.
