How Much Was Denys Barrow Paid in Legal Fees?

Joseph Waight

And since we had the Fin Sec there, we also asked about the legal fees paid for certain select attorneys including the brother of the Prime Minister. Waight didn’t have the details, but did reveal with fees have been sectioned out between Denys Barrow and the PM’s own law firm, Barrow and Company.

Joseph Waight, Financial Secretary

“For the settlement on the electricity, the legal fee was about half a million dollars. On the telecom, the invoices have not come in yet, but Mister Barrow had a very small role working on that. The other law firm working on that was Barrow and Williams and I understand they were doing work more for B.T.L., not for the government of Belize. So we expect a much smaller invoice; B.T.L. will pick up most of that cost that’s what I am saying.”

Mike Rudon

“But Denys Barrow you said had a minor role, but he was the one that has led the B.T.L. case all the way to the CCJ, every stage.”

Joseph Waight

“Yes, but he is being paid as the work progresses. But this final settlement work, most of that was done by another law firm, Barrow and Williams and that bill, as I understand it, goes to B.T.L. because they were working with B.T.L. on that matter. Mister Denys Barrow, Barrow and Company, not to be confused…they will have to apply to the CCJ for all the withdrawals and that is not that much work. So we expect a much smaller bill.”

Mike Rudon

“The Fortis settlement, could you give us an idea of what you are trying to get at because the claim out there is that there have been overpaid, exorbitant fees in the millions of dollars. You mentioned for the settlement he got half a million. Could you tell us how much approximately he has gotten in the years leading up to the settlement for work done on behalf of the government?”

Joseph Waight

“There so many cases, I don’t have it on top of my head. You are asking for B.T.L. matter or everything? I would have to run my numbers because I don’t want to get confused because sometimes we pay law firms, including Barrow and Company, compensation for clients. So we have to separate out now…it may show up as Barrow and Company on an invoice, but in the fine print, will say compensation for clients, land payments and so forth. So I would have to sit down and settle it out.”

Mike Rudon

“So you wouldn’t be willing to concede that it could conceivably be millions of legal fees over the past years?”

Joseph Waight

“I don’t think so because we have several actions going on and several different law firms. Remember we had Barrow and Company. Prior to that, we had Lois Young and Company…she did quite a bit of work. We’ve had…some of the cases have been fought by Michael Young’s law firm and so I really need to sort it out to see who’s for what and within that, how much of that was client payment how much of that was actually for services.”
