Francis Smith Says He is not Funding COLA

Francis Smith

COLA, the Citizens Organized for Liberty Through Action, will be organizing a public meeting in the Pickstock Constituency on Thursday. The venue is significant because of COLA’s most recent campaign. They’ve called on Prime Minister Barrow to remove Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington, but with no success. So now the grassroots activist organization is going on the streets to try get Elrington voted out. That’s good news for P.U.P. Pickstock candidate Francis Smith. Today we asked him about the new dynamic in that constituency, not only with COLA’s entry, but also that of Patrick Rogers, representing the new Belize Progressive party.

Francis Smith, PUP Candidate, Pickstock

“We run a participatory democracy. Everyone has a right to run. I have no problem, no contradiction with that. Part of the agenda of the PUP involves territorial integrity as well. That is COLA’s agenda, and it is apparently their sole agenda. So I can’t say that I disagree with their agenda. Our agendas coincide. I am of the view that Minister Sedi Elrington misrepresented Belize for years. He should have been removed a long time ago. Just like Pablo Marin should have been removed from 2009. Our agendas coincide but that is not the only agenda we have in Pickstock.”

“How do you see it changing the dynamic…the entry of COLA and Patrick Rogers?”

Francis Smith

“I am running my campaign in Pickstock. It is a challenge. I go house to house. I can’t stop anyone from running in Pickstock. We are in a free society. I can’t oppose him and tell him not to run. I am extremely confident in myself. I am working as hard as I can and that’s about it.”

“Doc it seems obvious to me at least from the outside that the entry of COLA and the entry of Patrick Rogers would benefit you.”

Francis Smith

“Like I said our agendas coincide. I am not a part of COLA. They are independent thinkers. I am an independent thinker. That our agendas coincide…yes, that is so.”

“The other media house has made a lot of the fact that you met with the president of COLA earlier this week. I think they’re insinuating that this is a move started by you to get COLA in there.”

Francis Smith

“That is not so. The first time I heard of that was on Wednesday. Geovannie called me, I met with him, and that is the extent of it.”

Reporter

“Are you funding COLA?”

Francis Smith

“Funding COLA? As I have said before in prior interviews, it is extremely hard for me to be a career politician. I work as an orthopaedic surgeon. I am still half time at Medical Associates. I fund my campaign and I can barely do so with what I make. So I cannot, it is impossible…I cannot fund COLA.”
