CWU President Says S.S.B. Management Ignoring Rules

Matura-Shepherd says that the reason the employees waited to receive their uniforms is because it is only at that point that they could calculate how much they believe they are due for a clothing allowance. As to the stance taken by S.S.B. Chairman Dough Singh, Matura-Shepherd told us that she believes he’s not being given accurate information by management.

“I don’t think he’s being fully appraised then because if he looks at their own record, every time, every eighteen months when they should get new uniforms, they are late. And because you are late, you go and comply with the regulation that deals with clothing allowance. You are entitled to your clothing allowance. So he knows better than I that there is a procedure, a protocol, there is an agreement in place and that is what the staff is asking to be complied with. It is not something trivial; it is something that under their own regulations, under their own policies; if you don’t go to work in uniform, they have penalties against you. And it’s under their own policies that they created that. If you do not get your uniform when you should then you are paid the clothing allowance because now this is when you are wearing other stuff so the allowance—if you work with these different entities—is to make sure that you have decent clothing, per their own policy, as to what you should wear to be presentable at the workplace.”

“So what happens next? Do you all wait until the next board meeting when the entire CBA, which includes the uniform allowance, will be discussed or is this a matter which you believe should be dealt with immediately?”

“It’s a matter to be dealt with immediately because under the CBA, this wouldn’t really come into effect simply because what you are asking for…a CBA is to negotiate more rights. What minimal you have or you negotiate for more benefits…more things for the staff. What we are talking about here is not something that we have to go and ask for something; it is something that is already provided. We are only asking for compliance with what is already in effect. So why would the management not want to comply with what is already in effect? It doesn’t make sense. And please note that the staff went and did a half our protest; that’s during their lunch time…that is very lawful. The staff has made every attempt through their rep to try and get management to agree that they will comply with what is already written—not asking for anything new. And the staff has held back all this time. The only reason that they are saying these thigns now is because it has become public. But you have to understand in these situation and these entities…like they are an essential service. When they reach to the point that they make themselves visible; you know they are not very vocal. It is because you have to mean that you’ve reached a crisis point.”
