OW Man Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Vicious Beating

Carlos Griffiths

According to our records, since the start of the year, there have been five murders in the northern municipality of Orange Walk. On Friday night, that count went up by one after a sixty-three year old man died at the K.H.M.H.  Carlos Griffiths was badly beaten last Monday night in front of Monica’s Pawn Store on the Belize Corozal Road in Orange Walk Town. But he succumbed to his injuries three days later and police have now ruled his death as a murder. Duane Moody headed to Orange Walk today and spoke with the family who grieves his untimely death.

It’s been three days since the family of Carlos Griffiths has been grieving his untimely death. On Friday night, the sixty-three year old died at the K.H.M.H. where he was admitted in a critical condition three days earlier. Paraquat, as he was affectionately known, was murdered by two men who attacked him on Monday in front of Monica’s Pawn Store in Orange Walk where he would routinely be sitting on a chair. The family was at home on Monday night when they were informed that “Paraquat” was brutally beaten and left for dead on the Belize Corozal Road in the center of town. His nephew, Richard Mark, rushed to the scene to find his uncle lying in a pool of blood.

“I deh home yah di relax, but noh worry about nothing because I know my uncle dah wah person weh faas with nobody right when I get the news that my uncle deh out there hurt. So when I reach out there, I see my uncle out there in a pool of blood. Mien….nobody know that feeling to watch yo uncle on the ground under this condition right…all ah ih face tear up, ih eye di bulge out of his head; dehn kick out all of ih teeth.”

Insp. Nicolas Palomo, Deputy O.C., Orange Walk Police

“About eight-twenty-five police visited the Belize Corozal Road where on arrival they observed Carlos Griffith, a Belizean unemployed of an unknown address here in Orange Walk Town suffering from multiple injuries to his head and face. He was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital where afterwards he was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he was admitted in a critical condition. He was assaulted by two Creole descent male persons who inflicted the injuries with him. They knocked him with a pint and a stool….afterwards they made good their escape. As a result of the injuries, he received a broken face and a fractured skull. He was admitted at the K.H.M.H. and on October second, 2015 he succumbed to his injuries.”

Although he has his relatives living in Orange Walk, Griffiths chose to live a humble life on the streets of the town. He was known as a handyman by everyone in the area and also for his singing.

Richard Mark

“My uncle dah noh wah person weh…he dah wah cool person mien. He mess with everybody. He dah mi the handyman for everybody out dah the spot weh ih deh. So I can’t understand why dehn do it to the man like that. My uncle dah wah musician; ih like sing. Everybody know ahn as wah singing person and wah easy going person. Yo could talk to him and laugh and give yo jokes. Dah just he right there; that dah Paraquat. Right? I can’t understand it mien…I can’t understand it.”

Police have one Belize City man in custody and are looking for another, who is also from the city, in connection with this latest homicide in that northern municipality.

Insp. Nicolas Palomo

“Orange Walk Police has detained a suspect and we are just awaiting the results of an identification parade; then probably charges will be laid.”

Duane Moody

“The motive behind the attack…have you guys been able to establish that?”

Insp. Nicolas Palomo

“It was just a random assault.”

While police say that the murder was a random act of violence by a couple of Belize City men, the family says that information is that Griffiths life was taken over a chair.

Richard Mark

“Two young bwai from Belize City, two colored dude from Belize City, but nobody knows them cause they strange dah Orange Walk. And according to the people weh di talk out there, the understanding is that it is for one chair weh ih sit down pan. Fi wah simple chair? Dehn take away my uncle life fi wah chair….right. Everybody know ih like smoke; ih dah wah lee crack head…but he noh thief nobody. He wah wash ih vehicle, do wah lee errand, make ih lee money and whatever he want do with ih money, dah fi he at the end of the day. But to take away his life for a chair? It’s stupid mine.”
