Anthony ‘Boots’ Martinez Says “Unions Are Jacking G.O.B.!”

Since the beginning of the week, several unions including the Christian Workers Union on behalf of its Social Security Board members, the Belize Energy Workers Union, as well as the faculty and staff of the University of Belize and the staff of the K.H.M.H. have been accelerating demands for salary increases and benefits. As the term of the government expires because of snap elections on November fourth, the unions are of the view that it is necessary to strike while the iron is hot. This morning, we asked the very outspoken U.D.P. Minister, Boots Martinez if he feels the unions are forcing the hand of the government. In fact, Boots Martinez feels they are actually jacking G.O.B.

“Well I think that…I think that it is very pathetic that everything is coming down at this time. But regardless of what you know it is like everything else…when we announce the election, dah noh only the unions…but the regular voters, the expectation raise higher the minute an election is announced. So I say let us see what it will pan out for itself. I think it is very important for us to sit down and have a dialogue. For example in the case of one union, as I understand it, there are ongoing negotiations with social security, but one; I understand that the meeting was for next week and they moved it for this Friday. But you know how them things go…election is here so I think that they have to be ongoing negotiations like with the K.H.M.H., like with the B.T.L. and the energy workers. And I think it’s a negotiation…you can’t just jump up and say I want raise and I want raise now and give me two weeks or so. How everything work like that?”

“So you think they are trying to force the government’s hand given the fact that elections are around the corner?

“What you mean bout force the government’s hand? I think they are trying to jack the government; not only force the government. I think they are trying to jack the government and noh only force the government’s hand. In my view, if you are tied up in a negotiation and then for you to say, without the negotiation conclude, and you say I want it ina two weeks or else…then that dah like yo di jack the man. I just the say…yo di look fi jack the man against a wall. Yo either come in or weh that mean.”
