Officials Says Intensive Investigation Underway

Pablo Marin

This morning, there was a critical meeting at the Western Regional Hospital concerning the tragic case of Nolberta Sanchez. We’re told it included all those who tended to her, as well as specialists from the K.H.M.H. who are acting as external evaluators to determine if indeed there was negligence. Nobody at the facility is talking just yet because of an almost certain lawsuit coming the way of the Ministry of Health. Today, the one thing that both Minister Pablo Marin and C.E.O. Peter Allen could state is that indeed, it was a tragedy.

Pablo Marin, Minister of Health

“It’s very sad; my heart goes out to the family, but we are doing investigations and the Ministry will start to do all investigations that we need to do and deal with the situation.”

“When can we expect the results of the investigation?”

Pablo Marin

“Really we don’t know…our technical people already have that on their hands. We cannot say anything more because it will be, like I have already mentioned, they will take legal action on it.”

“But have you spoken to the management, to the doctors, on this particular case?”

Pablo Marin

“Remember this just happened like two days ago and I was here in Corozal, but definitely my C.E.O. is telling me more or less what is happening. And definitely, we will deal with it.”

Peter Allen

Peter Allen, C.E.O., Ministry of Health

“It’s a tragedy as every such case is a tragedy. Really our thoughts and our prayers go out to the family. I am aware of the case; I am not aware of the details because the first thing that we do when we come aware of the case is that we trigger the office of the Director of Health Services to investigate and conduct, make a full report based on their investigation. So that has already started. I am not aware of the details of the case, but, as you know, in these days of litigation, the challenge for us is that where we would wish to say more, we are not allowed to say more for cases that may go to litigation. But most of all, for us, any such case is a tragedy and really, once again, our hearts, our thoughts and our prayers go to the family.”

This is certainly a tragedy. As an OBGYN, I have dealt
with post partum hemorrhage. It is a nightmare for all the parties
Involved. At my hospital, we have developed protocols that address
this situation and they can be easily adopted in Belize. It would be
Beneficial for all health care personnel to get additional education
On how to deal with this type of emergency.

Minister, your CEO is telling you “more or less” what is happening? I hope it is more THAN less. You should be fully apprised so you can stop sounding dopey.
