Sporting Highlights with James Adderley

Good evening, I’m James Adderely and this is Sports Monday.

We take you out immediately to the Norman Broaster Stadium inside scenic San Ignacio where Police FC hosted an old rival, the Belize Defense Force in a ballgame that found both ball clubs looking for a 1st season win in 3 tries. The police look to open off this corner kick from Carlton Thomas that forces Tevin Gamboa to come up with a necessary touch. Kafu Roches then gets this open look at goal only to be denied by a divine save from Tevin Gamboa. At the other end, Paul Nunez gets this chance to give the army the opener but it turns out to be a high riser. Give props to Harrison Roches who shows range when he smacks this set piece against the crossbar of the goal defended by Jamie Brooks.

So we go to 2nd half and Osmar Duran’s launch of this set piece gets a deflection off the wall that almost gives the B.D.F. the opening goal. The Police responds off this set piece triggered by Andres Makin; Tevin Gamboa can’t come up with the save but recovers in time to prevent Jerome Belisle from scoring. Folks, some 30 minutes into the closing half, Andres Makin mounts this individual effort off the left wing and the finish is a thing of beauty as Police takes the 1-zip lead. Carlton Thomas then looks to double the Police with this penetration that produces a power punch foiled by a big time save from Tevin Gamboa. The B.D.F. thinks they’ve come up with the equalizer when Adgar Adderley sends this ball at goal; Shane Flores reaches it with a perfect slice that tangles inside the net only to be denied by the offside ruling of the linesman. Police records the 1-zip big win in regulation play.

In other results from the weekend, Placencia Assassins burned Wagiya 3 to 2 and Verdes handled the bandits in a 3-1 blast. Looking to the weekend, only 1 match is scheduled. On Saturday, Placencia Assassins will host Police at 7:30 p.m. to complete a back match. This is because Verdes leaves for Queretero Mexico to face the Gallos Blanco in Game II of its CONCACAF Champions series tomorrow. The ballgame is set for Thursday, the 17th. Verdes and Queretero settled for a scoreless draw in Game I. Meanwhile, Verdes FC begins its 2 game series with San Francisco FC of Panama on the 22nd September. The current standings show Queretero leading with 4 pts from 3 outings. San Francisco has 3 pts from 2 outings while Verdes shows 1 pt from its only appearance so far.

In cycling news, we take you to the start of the Weekend Warriors 2nd series which leaves 10 miles and heads to the hilly terrain at Armenia to conclude the 40 mile ride. Isaiah Willacy and Preston Martinez grab command of the pace around mile 25. The lead duo continues to lead as the race passes through the Belmopan Junction. The on-the-road alliance concludes some half mile from the finish line when Preston Martinez opts for the solo flight. Preston Martinez of Kulture Tours/Megabytes crosses the finish line uncontested for top honors in 2 hours 7 minutes 22 seconds. Isaiah Willacy of FT Williams rolls in for 2nd place and also scoops up 1st place in Category B. 39 seconds later, Category A rider, Kent Bob Gabourel claims 3rd place overall. Kareem Flowers of Santino’s takes 4th place, while B Class rider, Mark Lisbey of FT Williams rounds out the top 5. In the 30 mile C Class ride, Alejandro Morales of Caribbean Tires took top honors in 2 hours 10 minutes. His teammate, Enrique Morales grabbed 2nd place and Edward Blanc of Stationery House/Medina’s finished 3rd.

Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
