COLA & BTV Unite to Demand an F.O.B. at the Sarstoon

Wil Maheia

The Sarstoon sovereignty issue remains on the front-burner in Belize, and seems likely to be situated there for the foreseeable future. Even as Guatemala moves through a turbulent time amid impeachment and election scenarios, there is growing tension along the Sarstoon where suddenly it appears our B.D.F. are encountering increasingly aggressive Guatemalan military. In addition, where once Belizeans could travel into the Sarstoon, that grand old river which graces our national anthem…suddenly it doesn’t seem to belong to Belize anymore. Those issues have galvanized organizations like COLA and the BTV, who met this morning in Belize City and emerged with a joint statement to Government – not surprisingly, calling for the construction of the Forward Operating Base at the mouth of the Sarstoon.

Wil Maheia, Head, Belize Territorial Volunteers

“This Guatemala issue is burning. A lot of things are happening. We can’t even go to our island right now. We can’t even go into the river, so that’s what we’re meeting here about. Because we go down to the river and the Guatemalans are there. They’re on our side even preventing us from going into the river. We need the government to give an explanation.”

“Coming out of that last Sarstoon trip what we noticed is that there was a specific campaign that needed to be done to address this situation because back in the days we used to hear not one blade of grass, but now it’s an entire island and an entire river. So when we look at the situation we thought it warranted a campaign and one that we are happy to say many people have responded very well, like those who have given their support to get T-shirts printed, and people are calling to be a part of it.”

Wil Maheia

“We’ve always supported COLA. In fact if you go back to the archives you’ll see that when we started the whole border clearing the machete was unveiled at one of COLA’s AGMs. So it has been a long lasting relationship and we continue to support each other and this is another way we are supporting COLA in calling for building the base now.”

Well Hatari me and you join the force to fight for our Country. That is being Belizean. We have to start thinking what we can do for our country instead of what our country can do for us.
