COLA Says G.O.B.’s Actions Suggest Border is Porous

Geovanni Brackett

And that campaign to get a base built at the mouth of the Sarstoon is even more critical now, says Brackett, because government’s actions have given the impression that our border is porous, or perhaps even non-existent.

Geovanni Brackett, President, COLA

“When we look at the behaviour of our government representatives we at COLA cannot help but question their true motives. We take into consideration that SATIIM which is an N.G.O. that was sanctioned to take care of the park in that area…their park management status was never renewed. When we look at that…when we look at the fact that the government is discouraging us from visiting the island and the area….the actions of the government have actually made our border more porous and less secure. And by their actions we have indirectly and directly given up portions of Belize. That is a scary thing, to know that this government has done its very best to not secure Belize. And so we at COLA will continue our campaign. We will continue to work with the BTV and will continue to support. The statement that will be issued out is that we at COLA support it and we definitely continue to make our call that the government make the diplomatic note that we thought was very strong – and it turns out was just a note – to reveal that and its contents and to reveal especially the response by the Guatemalans. And we need to question the Prime Minister…since they have responded, what will be our response to their response. It is those things and for those reasons that we are here and we continue to make this campaign. We continue to call on Belizeans to be awakened. We know that it is a time of celebration, but it is also a time of sadness for where we stand.”
