Jimmy Morales Stages Upset in Guatemalan Elections

There has been a major upset in the Guatemalan elections.  Jimmy Morales, a businessman and comedian, is the front- runner in Sunday’s elections. Latest poll results show that while Morales enjoys a clear lead in the election results, he failed to secure the required fifty percent of votes which means he will now head to a run-off in October. Manuel Baldizon, the businessman, who figured prominently as front runner for months before the elections, had his presidential aspirations dimmed following the turmoil that led to the imprisonment of former president, Otto Perez Molina, and former Vice president, Roxana Baldetti. Former First Lady Sandra Torres, who has connections to Belize and Baldizon battled for second place coming neck to neck.  But Guatemala’s official elections body, the TSA, has declared a razor thin margin for Torres. Still yet, there is speculation is that she will be challenged in the courts by Baldizon.  Morales’ surprise surge in the polls came in the face of the customs fraud which his campaign capitalized on running on a slogan, “Never Corrupt nor a Thief;” he has no previous political experience.  And while not much is known about his proposed policies, Morales has spoken about the territorial dispute on which he takes a hard line. In May, he wrote on his Facebook that he will do everything to recover Belize. Here is that statement, which when translated says, “I will do everything in my power to recover our territory in dispute.” Morales accounts for twenty-four percent of the votes cast. And with ninety-eight point seventeen percent counted, Torres is ahead of Baldizon by a small margin of three thousand eight hundred and twenty-nine votes.

  1. so it go says:

Well, time to stop playing Mr Nice Guy with Guatemala. I hope this is a wake up call to our Prime minister Barrow and that inept Erlington! Continue being diplomatic and neglecting this issue that is something of serious gravity. We are slowly being invaded by the guatemalans and sooner or later we will be theirs. I hope my children and grand children dont live to see that. We should have never left the protection from Mother England. We would be safe under their government and with the protection of the British soldiers.

STOP BUYING GUATEMALAN PRODUCTS, STOP USING THEIR TRANSPORTATIONS, TAXIS ETC., THAT ARE INFESTING BELIZE , ESPECIALLY IN THE WESTERN DISTRICT OF CAYO.
STOP SELLING YOUR COUNTRY FOR THE LOOKS OF ONE DOLLARS LESS IN TAXI, USE BELIZE TAXIS. SEND THE MESSAGE, DO NOT SUPPORT CORRUPTIONS, USE BELIZE TAXIS.

That may be true but at what point will we learn to take care of ourselves?2
