Meet and Greet on George Street and Rocky Road

Chester Williams

The north and south eastern divisions of the Belize Police Department are partnering to tackle crime in the city. Today, they were out in the George Street area talking to residents about community policing efforts in their neighborhood. News Five caught up with Assistant Commissioner of Police Dezerie Phillips and Senior Superintendent Chester Williams  for an update on their anti-crime approach.

Sr. Supt. Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“We have a joint meet and greet with north side officers coming over to assist us; when north side has theirs we will be going over to north side to assist in their meet and greet efforts as well. What we wanted to do is to get as much officers as we can to cover as much grounds to meet the people of south side Belize City. I had a meeting with some people from George Street and while I met with some, there were some I had no plans of meeting with because of the behavior they were portraying out on the streets. And like I’ve said before, the meet and greet is not really about meeting those persons already caught up in the criminal justice system, but rather to show the law-abiding populace that there is a good side of the police. And we want them to know that…through this effort, we want them to work with us so that’s the objective of the meet and greet—to bridge that gap between the community and the police—to let them see that we are serious about working with them.”

ACP Dezerie Phillips, Regional Commander, Eastern Division North

“It is very important for us because you all know that unity is strength so we decided to partner with the south division today to conduct this meet and greet in this area. This effort will be reciprocated when north division does their meet and greet next week. It is very important when we can get our officers to work together; we show that the work that we are doing is a joint effort. It is for the benefit of Eastern Division and the citizenry on a whole. Today is just one of the reasons to show that there is cause for us to continue to work together because what happens on the north side affects the south and vice-versa. We have had a very good working relationship. Mister Williams has been on the scene for some time and the north division—we are here to support and he is here to support us. Today is just a gesture to show there is cooperation, there is communication; there is this networking among us. And not only with the north and the south division, but it extends to the rural division as well. And you’ll be seeing initiatives where the three divisions will be coming together and doing things with the community to foster that working relationship for Eastern Division.”

The area of focus including George Street, Plues Street, Rocky Road, Orange Street, Jump Street, Taylor’s Alley and more.
