Mas Camp Fever Takes Over Belize City

Day two of mas camps took place on Wednesday night with four bands showing off their costumes and revelry. The more experienced bands came out in full strength with spectacular costumes as they converged at specific locations across the city. But what does it take to win the road march on Saturday September twelfth? Duane Moody finds out.

Day two of mas camps 2015 started on a different tune—it was dominated by the juniors: Trenchtown Masqueraders, Jump Street Posse and newcomer, Collet Royal Revelers. Now, the juniors are judged somewhat differently from the seniors; there are several guidelines. The costumes are more conservative and carry intricate detailing to ensure that when they do appear on the streets on September twelfth, spectators are left in awe. And that’s exactly what happened when these junior camps were visited—the judges were stunned by the level of creativity.

“Trenchtown is portraying the Secret of Wings in Candy City. This is a story based on two fairies flying through the woods—Tinkerbell and Periwinkle. When their wings touch, it lit up recognizing that they are sisters. And talking about the candy—I am looking at what kids like. Things children do every day eat every day. Come on when you are dealing with kids you have to sell for it. Well you know. ready or not, we have kids. Right now we have sixty-two strong or more out there and hell, whatever happens, we will get out there carnival day.”

“Would you say that Trenchtown is coming for the win and it is going to set itself aside from the other junior bands?”

“Well we are coming. Ready or not, we are coming and trust me carnival day, we wah ready.”

Over on Rio Grande Crescent off Faber’s Road Extension is where the defending Junior Champions, Jump Street Posse, gathered. Talk about defending its title, Band Leader, Marina Welcome is sparing no expense or details. She is incorporating the Belize Jaguars in her presentation this year and intends to retain the title.

“This year, Jump Street Posse is coming “Belize, Pride and Hope.” The Belize is bringing on the carnival heat Belizean style. The Pride is that the jaguar brings back the gold—they are fighting there and I am fighting here. The Hope is that costume over there. There’s a lot of killing going on in Belize and we have to stop it. Duane I have confidence in what I do. Win, lose or draw, whenever I am doing something I have that confidence. And like I said, nobody, nobody will ever think about doing the Jaguars. Everybody go on internet and copy this and copy that. I don’t do that. I watch TV and see what’s happening for that year. This year we have a lot of killing and that’s what Princess Hope is all about.”

It’s going to be a fight for the top spot for the carnival road march 2015 because rookie in the junior division, Collet Royal Revellers, say they are not intimidated. Its band leader, Samantha Soberanis, is no stranger to carnival. She danced in the bacchanal for years starting as a junior and then as a senior. This year, however, she is bringing out her own band with a rainbow theme.

“We are actually doing Messengers of the Sky, but it is being showcased through the formation of the rainbow. The queen is Queen Iris and you know the iris is in your eye so her eye is the over looker of everybody on this earth. First, we have the color red and that signifies life. We have the color orange and that is for people who are sick and need to get on with life—the orange signifies healing. You have people who have dull moments in their life and you see that sunshine with the extra light and you get that through the yellow. When you hear the color green, nature comes to mind so the green in nature. The blue is serenity. And the last two colors is indigo and violent so what we did was combine the last two colors that give you purple and that’s how we got the last color that signifies spirit.”

The senior band for the night was Jam Jam Mas Band. Unfortunately, we were unable to get an interview with the band leader, due to violent incidents that occurred nearby between rivaling gangs and police were involved. So that’s day two.
