BTV Welcomes Senator Shoman on Expedition

Lisa Shoman

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and current P.U.P. Senator Lisa Shoman announced on Thursday that she would be on the expedition to Sarstoon Island. That resulted in an immediate government release expressing consternation and accusing Shoman of a blatant political ploy. The release goes on to add that Shoman will be going on the trip to the Sarstoon as a private citizen, and not as a Senator. Be that as it may, Shoman is a member of the National Assembly and she will be going, a fact which has encouraged the leaders of the expedition.

Orlando de la Fuente, Northern Territorial Volunteers

“I’m happy that she is coming. Previously I know she was one of the architects of the confidence-building measures and it started under her uncle Assad Shoman. But I’m not going to get into what has happened in the past and who signed the confidence-building measures. I’m happy that Senator Shoman has decided to join the expedition and we welcome her presence. I think it lends a lot to the expedition. It lends it some more credence too and I wish other leaders, other political leaders, would have the fortitude to join the expedition also.”

“Do you think in a sense it forces the government to take more notice? This is a member of the National Assembly who is going.”

Orlando de la Fuente

“Of course! It has to. They have to. And I read that she has informed the relevant authorities, the Guatemalan Ambassador and the President of her Senate, so it does bring more weight to the expedition to have a Senator like her join us.”

The expedition will leave from Barranco at nine-thirty Sunday morning for the twenty-minute trip to the Sarstoon. De la fuente explains that during their trip on Wednesday they were unable to find any suitable spot on the island itself to make landfall, so they will do so at a beachhead at the mouth of the river, considered well within Belizean territory.
